Things to consider before getting a stone bench

  • stone benches are heavy, so plan ahead where to place it, since it is not easily moved
  • if you are setting your bench on the lawn, think how you are going to cut grass around it. The best idea will be to have a bench set on a paved surface where the weeds won’t grow
  • most stone benches are backless, so if you need back support while sitting, this kind of bench might be the wrong fit for you
  • they are hard to sit on too, you might need to use bench cushion if you are going to sit on the bench for a  prolonged time. But if you are using a bench primarily for decorative purpose or occasional sitting, this should not be an issue.

Think if the bench’s style and size fits your garden design

Oftentimes the bench that looks pretty on a picture might be the wrong choice for your garden design, so be sure to pick one that enhances your garden vibe.

Luckily, stone benches come in different styles, so you will have plenty of options to choose from.

For example, a stone bench with clean lines suits contemporary gardens well, curved stone garden benches create a romantic mood, and a stone cast bench that looks like faux weathered wood will look good in a cottage garden.

Also, select the right size of bench so it fits the scale of your garden size: not too big and not too small.

How to install a stone garden bench

Usually stone garden benches come in three separate pieces: two legs (pedestals) and a top.

You will need two people to safely carry each piece, because it’s very heavy.

The pedestals need to be carefully spaced, so the top that goes across them is balanced properly. This task can be somewhat challenging, especially with the curved bench.

In the majority of stone benches you can place pedestals anywhere you like, meaning you can choose the distance between benches legs.

As long as the location where bench sits is level and has a solid base your should be able to install your bench without any special tools.
