1. Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree (Ficus Lyrata)


How Fast Does It Grow Per Year: two to three feet a year. 

A tall, lush, tree-like fiddle leaf fig with its shiny, violin-shaped leaves  is an awesome asset to your house if you want a plant that makes a statement and looks expensive, but requires little maintenance. This plant (Ficus lyrata) can grow to 6 feet or taller. There are other varieties of the plant such as “Suncoast” and “Compacta,” that don’t grow as tall and look more like a bush than a tree.

Care Advice: do not over-water: only water the plant if the soil feels dry. Too much direct sunlight can damage the leaves. Don’t pluck off the baby leaves at the bottom either, let those naturally fall off over time. Clean the leaves using a duster or by giving the plant a lukewarm shower.

2. Wintergreen, Weeping Fig (Ficus Benjamina)

Care Advice: Weeping figs can be placed in areas with direct or indirect sunlight. They like high humidity and suffer from dry conditions. Try to keep the soil moist and mist the leaves occasionally to prevent them from drying out and falling. Weeping figs can become victims to pests like aphids, thrips and whiteflies, so be aware of those.

Where to place: looks great in any room in the house, just be sure not to place weeping fig under an air register, because it will over dry the plant and cause the leaves to fall off.

3. Umbrella plant (Schefflera or Heptapleurum)

How Fast Does It Grow Per Year: if the plant is healthy enough, they grow up to 3 feet per year.

Originated in Australia, an umbrella plant has flat waxy green foliage held far out by the strong woody stem like umbrella spokes. This tall upright fast growing indoor plant can reach 6 feet. Umbrella plants are available in large and dwarf sizes.

Care Advice: it should be watered whenever the soil surface is dry. It likes areas with bright light, though shouldn’t have full sun more than 1-2 hours per day. Give the umbrella plant fertilizer every month and prune it only if the plant is too big.

4. Ti Plant Pink Diamond (Cordyline Fruticosa)

The cordyline is a great tall plant for indoors. Part of the family of ti plants, Pink Diamond is a showy awesome plant with broad green leaves and flowers that have two tones of pink.

Care Advice:  plant in acidic potting soil mix. Water weekly when the top of the soil starts to dry. Keep the plant moist but not wet. The leaves will enjoy occasional misting. Pink Diamond will do well in bright indirect or filtered sunlight which will intensify the color of its leaves.

5. Split-leaf philodendron (Monstera Deliciosa)

also known as Swiss cheese plant.

How Fast Does It Grow Per Year: about 2 feet. 

The most popular indoor plant on the list, a split-leaf philodendron is a large plant that is easy to care for. Its popular name “Swiss cheese plant” refers to the holes which develop in its leaves similar to the holes in some Swiss cheeses. The shiny heart-shaped leaves will eventually split when the plant is fully grown. Be aware that this plant is poisonous and could pose a threat to pets.

Care Advice: a split-leaf philodendron is very tolerant plant, it will grow great in bright indirect light and temperatures of 20–30 °C (68–86 °F). It needs to be watered just to keep the soil slightly moist.

6. Pothos (Epipremnum Aureum)

also known as golden pothos, money plant, Ceylon creeper, hunter’s robe, ivy arum, silver vine, Solomon Islands ivy, marble queen, taro vine, devil’s ivy.

How Fast Does It Grow Per Year: vines can grow up to six feet

This plant produces trailing stems that will hang or climb when given support. Pothos leaves are heart-shaped and have a glossy, bright look. They come in different colors: green, yellow, white, or pale green.  Keep in mind that pothos is toxic for cats and dogs and mildly toxic to humans, but you are not going to eat it, right?😊

7. String of Hearts (Ceropegia Woodii)

How Fast Does It Grow Per Year: vines can grow 6-8 feet long. 

A string of hearts is a succulent trailing vine. Its leaves are shaped like hearts. When exposed to bright light the leaves are deeper in color, when the plant is kept in low light then the leaves are pale. 

Care Advice: Do not leave your string of hearts in direct sunlight as this can destroy the leaves.  A string of hearts should be watered only when dry. Keep in mind that the plant requires good drainage, excess water should be removed from the plant saucer after watering.

8. String of fishhooks (Senecio Radicans)

also known as String of Bananas, Banana Vine, Necklace Plant.

How Fast Does It Grow Per Year: up to four feet long. 

This succulent houseplant has multiple tendrils of glossy, banana-shaped foliage. String of fishhooks plant produces small whitish flowers, usually in the late winter or early spring, that smell like cinnamon.

Care Advice: it likes bright to high light, but not direct sunlight. It is a great idea to put this plant near a window that faces south or west. Water the fishhooks every 3-6 weeks and grow it in light soil.

9. Wandering Jew Plant (Tradescantia)

The sap from stems is toxic for cats.

Care Advice: The best part of the spiderwort is that it is not fussy. You can grow this plant in different soil conditions. It will  tolerate direct or indirect sunlight.

Where to use: great for hanging baskets, looks nice placed in pots on the top of kitchen cabinets or bookcases.

10. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum)

How Fast Does It Grow: the leaves grow up and then arch down. They can grow up to 2-3 feet long. The spiderettes appear only on plants that are a few years old

Spider plants have long, grassy striped leaves that can be greenish,yellowish or whitish depending on the variety. Mature spider plants produce cute “baby” spider plants called “pups” or “spiderettes” that resemble spiders (that is how the plant got its name) and hang from the parent plant. You can propagate spider plants by planting spiderettes in the soil. 

Spider plants are excellent plants for cleaning air in your house: according to NASA studies spider plants were able to remove 95 percent of formaldehyde from a sealed Plexiglas chamber in 24 hours. And the good news is that spider plants are not toxic to cats, so there is no excuse for not getting this wonderful plant for your home.

Care Advice: with a spider plant, you want to make sure not to give it too much water: water spider plant once a week at the roots while avoiding the leaves. It grows best in indirect sunlight. 

Where to use: perfect to use in long rectangular planters as a space divider. It looks great in hanging baskets too, especially with dangling spiderettes.
